During a televised health conference organized by Medically Speaking, Dr. Parul Gupta, the Transplant Coordinator at PGIMER Chandigarh, was honored with the esteemed Sushruta Award 2024 for her remarkable achievements in advancing the field of organ donation. Presented by Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, this recognition signifies a significant milestone in her career journey. On February 8, 2024, at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, the awards ceremony honored the remarkable accomplishments of healthcare professionals. Dr. Gupta's steadfast dedication and outstanding efforts in facilitating over 150 organ and tissue donations at PGIMER Chandigarh were recognized with this prestigious honor. Since 2019, Dr. Gupta has served as the Transplant Coordinator at PGIMER Chandigarh, playing a pivotal role in the success of the institute's deceased organ donation program. Her expertise and dedication have been instrumental in spearheading some of the most successful organ donation initiatives in a public sector hospital. At the Conclave, Dr. Gupta took part in a panel discussion titled "Donate Organs and Save Lives," where she actively emphasized the crucial role of transplant coordinators in deceased organ donation. She stressed the significance of approaching potential donor families with compassion and sensitivity, particularly during challenging times.
Dr. Gupta's impact extends beyond standard organ donation protocols, as she has actively spearheaded pioneering initiatives such as organ donation after cardiac death (DCD) and organ donation in very young children, including infants as young as 39 days old. These groundbreaking efforts were acknowledged by Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 99th episode, highlighting their significant role in broadening the scope of organ donation. A significant achievement in Dr. Gupta's career was the successful organ donation of a child aged only 70 hours at PGIMER Chandigarh in February 2020. Organ donation in infants at such a tender age presents distinctive challenges, necessitating compassion, sensitivity, and ethical considerations throughout the process. Dr. Gupta provided steadfast support and guidance to the grieving families, ensuring their journey was handled with the highest level of respect and care during this sensitive period. Apart from her significant contributions at the grassroots level, Dr. Gupta actively participates in research endeavors aimed at exploring innovative approaches to organ donation and transplantation.
