On Saturday, Bhiwandi city police filed a case against three doctors from a private hospital following a knee surgery that allegedly led to a patient's permanent disability. The action was taken after the Thane district surgeon confirmed negligence during the surgical procedure.
The patient, 58-year-old retired school teacher Sabia Ansari from Islampura, sought treatment at a Bhiwandi multi-speciality hospital for a knee injury resulting from an accident. An MRI revealed an ACL tear, and surgery was advised. On July 31, 2022, a doctor from Nashik performed the operation. During the procedure, equipment failure caused delays, and the hospital staff allegedly failed to maintain proper hygiene and infection-control measures.
Post-surgery, Ansari experienced severe pain, swelling, and pus at the incision site. Her husband, Faheem Akhtar Ansari, contacted the doctors multiple times, but they reportedly dismissed his concerns, prescribing only painkillers and physiotherapy. As her condition worsened, they consulted another clinic in Mulund, where doctors identified a severe infection. This led to a second surgery on September 14, 2022, to remove infected tissues. Despite costly antibiotic treatments, the infection persisted, necessitating a third surgery on November 18, 2022, which confirmed permanent knee damage.
Following complaints to the Thane Municipal Corporation, police, and district hospital, an inquiry committee was established. The Thane Civil Hospital issued a disability certificate to Ansari, confirming her permanent impairment due to medical negligence. Based on these findings, Bhiwandi city police registered a case against the three doctors involved in the initial surgery. A senior officer stated that the investigation is ongoing, and appropriate legal action will be taken.
On Tuesday, a doctor who works as a tutor at a government-run medical college lodged a complaint with Ahmedabad's Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), accusing her ex-boyfriend of defrauding her of Rs 28 lakh.
