On Tuesday, a doctor who works as a tutor at a government-run medical college lodged a complaint with Ahmedabad's Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), accusing her ex-boyfriend of defrauding her of Rs 28 lakh. The 38-year-old woman stated in her FIR that she had previously filed a complaint at the city police commissioner’s office on October 27, 2023, requesting an investigation into her former partner, Dharmadeep Narela, a resident of South Bopal. The woman first encountered Dharmadeep in 2012 when she enrolled in the medical college and was searching online to purchase a life insurance policy. After Dharmadeep provided her with the policy, they established a connection and began chatting frequently. She informed the police that her engagement ended in 2017, coinciding with Dharmadeep's divorce. Despite initially ignoring Dharmadeep's advances, she eventually agreed to a relationship with him. However, Dharmadeep consistently avoided discussing marriage, insisting that he would only consider it after establishing his own business. The doctor accused Dharmadeep of giving him Rs. 28 lakh between 2017 and 2022 throughout their relationship, even resorting to taking personal loans to support his business endeavors. However, following her father’s demise in 2022 and facing a financial crisis, the woman requested Dharmadeep to repay her. Allegedly, Dharmadeep refused and severed all ties with her, even threatening her with dire consequences if she pursued repayment. As a result, the DCB police have initiated an investigation into the case, filing charges of cheating, breach of trust, and criminal intimidation against Dharmadeep. This incident has illuminated the challenges of personal trust and financial vulnerability within intimate partnerships, emphasizing the complexities involved in seeking legal resolution in such cases.
