In a groundbreaking achievement for the government sector, the inaugural robotic surgery at Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Trivandrum proved successful. Two middle-aged cancer patients underwent the procedure, resulting in complete removal of one patient's tumor and significant removal in the other, leading to successful recoveries for both. Dr. Rekha A. Nayar, RCC's director, highlighted that the cost of this procedure is merely one-third of what private hospitals typically charge for similar surgeries. The robotic surgery unit will be able to perform complex surgeries with precision and efficiency. Surgery can help reduce blood loss, pain, infection rates, recovery times, and hospital stays, facilitating faster and smoother patient recovery. Under the leadership of Dr. Shaji Thomas, a proficient surgeon in the Surgical Oncology department, along with surgeons Dr. J. Shivaraman, Dr. R. Srivathsan, Dr. Akhil Thomas, and anesthesiologist Dr. Mary Thomas, Dr. Viji Pillai, and nursing staff including Indu, Rashmi, Ramya, Anjali, Baijudin, and technical team members of the Operation Theatre like Ebin, Santosh, and Kiran, constitute the team that worked behind the scenes for surgical procedures. The company that installed robotic surgical equipment at RCC provided training to doctors and other staff members. Last month, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the robotic surgery unit prepared under the Rebuild Kerala project, allowing funds for its setup.
