In Mumbai, more than 9,000 homoeopathic doctors who completed the Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) are preparing to launch an indefinite hunger strike starting July 16 at Azad Maidan. They are protesting the Maharashtra government’s decision, made public on July 11, to suspend their registration process with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) in response to objections raised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

These CCMP-qualified doctors argue that they have legal recognition to practice certain aspects of modern medicine, backed by amendments in state laws and approvals from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They also claim that suspending their registrations will leave many rural and underserved communities without proper healthcare. Homoeopathy associations across talukas, districts, and the state have united to support the strike, planning to close clinics and gather in Mumbai for at least three days.

Leading the protest will be Dr. Bahubali Shah, the administrator of the Maharashtra Homeopathy Council, who has announced an indefinite hunger strike from July 16. Their demands include immediate reinstatement of registrations, withdrawal of suspension orders, and increased representation for BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery) doctors in review bodies. They also urge lawmakers to address the issue during the upcoming Monsoon Assembly session and have appealed to the public and their representatives to visit Azad Maidan between July 16 and 18.
