India has reported a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases, with active infections rising to 7,121 as per the latest data from the Union Health Ministry. In the last 24 hours alone, six COVID-related deaths were recorded—three in Kerala, two in Karnataka, and one in Maharashtra. While the overall case fatality remains low, the uptick in daily infections has prompted health authorities to increase monitoring efforts across the country.
Kerala continues to account for the highest number of active cases, reporting 2,223 patients under treatment. Other states witnessing a steady rise include Gujarat, West Bengal, Delhi, and Maharashtra. Delhi now has 757 active cases, while West Bengal follows with 747. Officials in these regions have urged citizens to stay cautious and consider wearing masks in crowded places, even though mandatory restrictions remain lifted.
The recent wave is largely driven by the spread of Omicron sub-variants like JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC, which are currently under observation by the World Health Organization. Although these variants are more transmissible, they tend to cause only mild symptoms. Health experts have reiterated that COVID-19 is now behaving more like a seasonal flu, with periodic spikes expected, particularly during changes in weather.
