Lucknow: Two students from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have been arrested following a series of incidents involving sexual harassment and other antisocial activities. They are accused of sexually assaulting a 32-year-old male doctor. According to police sources, Shriman Narain Shukla and Suraj Dubey, both final year students, are two of the three accused in the case. The police are currently searching for the third individual, as well as two additional local youngsters who were reportedly present at the scene of the incident. Although the incident occurred on January 11, the victim filed a police complaint on February 4, leading to the registration of an FIR. According to sources, the accused and the victim purportedly connected through an app primarily utilized by the LGBTQIA community in December 2023. The doctor stated that he received a call from one of the accused, who claimed there was a medical emergency and that his roommate's condition was worsening.Upon the doctor's arrival at the university, he was purportedly directed to a hostel room where four individuals were already present. Allegedly, the doctor was not only stripped and subjected to unnatural sex but also robbed by them. According to the complaint, the accused allegedly confiscated the victim's gold ornaments, including a ring and a chain. Additionally, the victim asserted that the accused recorded the entire incident and threatened to share the footage on social media. Subsequently, the accused reportedly blackmailed the doctor with the footage and extorted money from him on multiple occasions. Police authorities stated that the accused were traced through surveillance of their bank accounts, which the victim had used for online transactions to send money. Varanasi Deputy Commissioner of Police RS Gautam reported that following their arrest, both accused confessed to the crime. The police official mentioned that the accused even wept and begged for mercy, promising not to commit the crime again and pleading for their future. Additionally, during interrogation, the accused purportedly disclosed that they had assaulted four other doctors and a businessman in the past. However, the officer noted that no other victim has come forward thus far. The police recovered a gold chain and a ring looted by the accused from the doctor, but the cash amounting to Rs 60,000, extorted from the victim, could not be retrieved as the accused had already spent the money, stated the official. The police have announced their intention to invoke the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act against the accused. The accused have been booked under Sections 377 (unnatural offences), 347 (wrongful confinement to extort property or constrain to an illegal act), 384 (extortion), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, as stated by the police. The BHU Chief Proctor, Prof. Shiv Prakash Singh, has tasked the Dean of Faculty with providing a report on the incident. He emphasized that the university would take disciplinary action against the accused students following the submission of the Dean's report and adherence to university regulations.
