Delhi-NCR is witnessing a significant increase in flu cases, with doctors reporting 10 to 15 patients daily presenting with symptoms such as high fever, persistent cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. This surge is primarily attributed to the seasonal transition from winter to summer and elevated air pollution levels, which exacerbate respiratory issues.
The predominant strains currently circulating are Influenza A (H3N2) and Influenza B, known to cause more severe symptoms, especially in vulnerable populations. Notably, patients are experiencing extended recovery periods, with symptoms lasting up to 10 days, longer than the typical 5-7 days. Individuals with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD, and cardiac issues are at a higher risk of complications, including pneumonia and bronchitis.
In response to the rising cases, the Delhi government has issued an advisory urging people to avoid crowded places and maintain hygiene practices similar to those recommended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj emphasized that while there is no need to panic, caution is essential. He noted that currently, around 20 cases are being reported daily in Lok Nayak Hospital and 7-8 cases in other hospitals.
Experts also highlight that elevated pollution levels in urban areas can weaken respiratory defenses, making individuals more vulnerable to infections. Additionally, erratic weather changes, such as an earlier onset of summer, may affect overall immune responses, increasing susceptibility to flu viruses.
To protect against the flu, healthcare professionals recommend the following preventive measures:
Vaccination: Annual flu shots can significantly reduce severity and risk.
Hygiene Practices: Frequent handwashing and wearing masks in crowded places can help prevent the spread of the virus.
Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a balanced diet and staying hydrated supports immunity.
Avoid Self-Medication: Consulting a doctor for proper treatment is crucial, especially for high-risk groups, and unnecessary antibiotics should be avoided.
By adhering to these measures, individuals can help mitigate the impact of the current flu surge in the region.
