The Maharashtra government has temporarily stopped allowing homeopathy doctors to treat patients using modern (allopathic) medicine. This came after the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) issued an order saying that those with a six‑month Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) could register as modern-medicine practitioners from July 15. However, this decision faced strong opposition from medical bodies like the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which argued it could endanger patient safety.
Facing pressure from doctors and with a legal case in the Bombay High Court, the government has set up a special seven‑member committee. The group includes officials from medical and AYUSH departments, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, and both medical and homeopathy councils. Their task is to review the CCMP course and suggest rules within two months. Meanwhile, the MMC has been told to stop registering any CCMP-qualified homeopathy practitioners.
Doctors welcomed this pause. The IMA and resident doctor groups had even planned a token strike on July 11 to protest the rule changes, warning that allowing homeopaths into allopathic practice would harm medical standards . The homeopathy community, however, said the course was designed to help in rural areas where fewer doctors live, and they may protest or take legal action if the decision is not reviewed fairly.
