In response to the tragic death of a pregnant woman at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has suspended 12 doctors, including senior officials and postgraduate trainees, citing clear cases of medical negligence.
The incident involved the administration of spurious saline from Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals, a company blacklisted by the state government. Investigations revealed that on the day of the surgery, a senior doctor was absent, attending to private practice instead of overseeing the patient in the ICU. The state has provided ₹5 lakh in compensation to the victim's family.
The Calcutta High Court has directed the state health department to cease using saline from the blacklisted company and to submit detailed reports on the incident. The court also instructed the state to compensate the victim's family and requested an action taken report from the central government regarding measures against the manufacturer.
A 13-member expert committee has been formed to investigate the matter, and a CID probe is underway. Samples of the saline have been sent to laboratories for testing to ensure the safety of medical supplies in state-run hospitals.
This incident has sparked political outrage, with opposition parties questioning the use of saline from a blacklisted company and demanding accountability from the state government. The Chief Minister emphasized that negligence from medical professionals will not be tolerated, and strict actions will be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The state government is taking steps to ensure that all medical supplies used in hospitals meet safety standards, aiming to restore public confidence in the healthcare system. The suspended doctors will remain under investigation as authorities work to determine the full extent of the negligence involved.
