The US White House has suggested that doctors and medical residents might be excluded from a newly introduced $100,000 fee on H-1B visa applications. This clarification came after hospitals and medical groups warned that the expensive charge could worsen doctor shortages in underserved areas.

The new rule, signed by President Trump on September 19, will apply to H-1B petitions filed on or after September 21. The administration says the fee is intended to limit visa use to highly skilled professionals and generate revenue, while also allowing case-by-case exemptions where needed.

Medical organizations argue that many hospitals, especially in rural parts of the US, depend on foreign-trained doctors They fear that unless physicians are exempted, patient care in these areas could suffer further.
