In a historic shift, the United Kingdom's medical workforce now comprises more female doctors than male, according to recent data from the General Medical Council (GMC). As of February 28, 2025, there are 164,440 licensed female doctors compared to 164,195 male doctors, marking a significant milestone in a traditionally male-dominated profession. This change is largely attributed to an increasing number of women enrolling in medical schools since the late 20th century. In the 2023/24 academic year, 60% of UK medical students were female, with Northern Ireland reporting an even higher percentage at 72%.
Despite this progress, disparities persist in certain medical specialties. Women are predominantly represented in fields such as obstetrics and gynecology (63%) and pediatrics (61%). However, they remain underrepresented in surgery, comprising only 17% of surgeons, as well as in ophthalmology and emergency medicine. Additionally, female doctors continue to face challenges such as sexual harassment, unequal pay, and difficulties balancing career and family life.
The GMC also reports a notable demographic shift, with ethnic minority doctors now outnumbering their white counterparts. This change is driven by an influx of medical professionals from countries like India, Pakistan, Egypt, and Nigeria, especially following Brexit. While these developments indicate a move toward greater diversity in the UK's medical workforce, ongoing efforts are essential to address existing inequalities and ensure all doctors have the support needed for successful careers.
India is currently witnessing a surge in viral infections caused by H3N2, Covid-19 and swine flu.
