India’s healthcare education has seen remarkable growth over the past 11 years, says Union Home Minister Amit Shah. From just seven AIIMS in 2014, the number has risen to 23. The count of medical colleges has nearly doubled from 387 to 780. Correspondingly, annual MBBS seats have surged from approximately 51,000 to around 118,000, while postgraduate medical seats have grown from about 31,000 to 74,000.
Shah, speaking at the inauguration of BGS Medical College and Hospital in Bengaluru, credited this rapid expansion to a holistic vision by the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that these changes reflect a focused national effort to combat poverty by addressing illness and high treatment costs. The minister also highlighted that around 60 crore Indians now benefit from free healthcare coverage of up to ₹5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
Beyond expanding medical colleges and seats, Shah emphasized broader public health efforts. These include programs like Fit India, Mission Indradhanush (vaccination), generic medicine outlets, nutrition initiatives such as Poshan Abhiyaan, and large-scale sanitation drives like Swachh Bharat. Together, he said, they form a comprehensive healthcare approach from early prevention to accessible treatment, reinforcing India’s commitment to better health outcomes.
