A recent incident at Zaheerabad Area Hospital in Telangana has highlighted critical issues in hospital infrastructure. During a sudden power outage, doctors were compelled to treat patients using mobile phone flashlights due to a delay in activating the backup generator. A video capturing this scenario went viral on social media, leading to widespread concern about patient safety and hospital preparedness.
In response to the incident, the Telangana Health Department suspended the hospital's superintendent, V Sridhar Kumar, citing negligence. An investigation conducted by the Sangareddy Collector and the Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Commissioner confirmed that the emergency ward was left without power for a significant period, despite the presence of a backup generator. The delay in restoring power disrupted emergency services and compromised patient care.
Following the investigation, the Health Department issued new guidelines mandating that all government hospitals ensure their backup generators are functional and ready to operate at all times. This directive aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and underscores the importance of reliable power infrastructure in healthcare facilities.
