New Delhi: On Wednesday, the police reported that members of a sextortion gang allegedly deceived an Ayurvedic doctor in the Khichripur area of east Delhi, extracting more than Rs 8 lakh under the pretense of deleting an "obscene" video of him. In the cyber police station of the east district, a FIR was filed by the 71-year-old doctor, detailing that he received a video call on July 13 last year, a crucial event in the incident. The FIR stated, "The caller, a woman, shouted that someone needed medical help, and the call got disconnected. I thought that some patient needed my help.” The complainant further informed the police that he received another video call late at night but could not attend it as he was sleeping. On July 14, he received another call, where he witnessed a woman undressing, as per details mentioned in the FIR, according to the police. I immediately disconnected the call and switched off my mobile phone. When I turned on my phone on July 15, I began receiving calls from various individuals who introduced themselves as Delhi Police personnel. They informed me that my video had gone viral on social media,” as mentioned in the FIR. The complainant informed the police that he began receiving threat calls from various numbers concerning the video. "I experienced pressure and fear as the callers asserted that the video had gone viral on multiple social media platforms. They extorted money, citing the arrest of the accused in Mumbai, travel expenses, and court expenses. The accused extorted a total of Rs 8.59 lakh so far and threatened me with dire consequences," the complainant conveyed to the police. The police registered an FIR under sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, and they are currently investigating the matter. A senior police officer stated that teams have been established to apprehend the accused, and they are currently scrutinizing mobile number details. The arrest of the accused is anticipated soon.
