The Andhra Pradesh government has agreed to fix a 20% in-service quota for Primary Health Centre (PHC) doctors in clinical branches for the current academic year. The decision came after several days of protests by government doctors who had opposed the proposed reduction of the quota to 15%.
The doctors had boycotted outpatient services across the state demanding that the previous quota be retained. Following talks with the health department, the government decided to restore the 20% quota for this year and assured that other issues raised by doctors, including promotions and allowances, would be looked into soon.
Officials said that although the expert committee initially found only 103 posts eligible under the in-service category, the government approved 190 seats to accommodate the demands. The move is expected to help over 250 PHC doctors secure postgraduate seats in clinical branches this year.
The health minister stated that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to rural healthcare and to ensuring fair opportunities for doctors serving in remote areas. However, officials added that a long-term policy on in-service quotas will be finalised after reviewing the impact of this year’s decision.
