Hyderabad: The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) doctors have successfully performed a minimally invasive surgery on a 60-year-old patient, removing 418 kidney stones. Led by Dr. K Purna Chandra Reddy, Dr. Gopal R Tak, and Dr. Dinesh M, the medical team chose percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) due to the complexity of the case, with the patient's kidney function at only 27%. This procedure involves small incisions through which specialized instruments, including a miniature camera and laser probes, are used to precisely target and remove the stones, minimizing trauma, expediting recovery, and preserving kidney function. Dr. Gopal Tak, a consultant urologist at AINU, noted that despite having kidney stones for three years, the patient remained asymptomatic due to obstruction from a large stone, leading to the formation of numerous smaller stones, the largest being 2 cm in size, necessitating breakdown before removal. Admitted to the hospital three weeks ago with severe vomiting and abdominal pain, the patient was diagnosed with a left kidney full of stones requiring immediate treatment. Dr. Gopal emphasized the causes of kidney stones, including low water intake, excessive salt and non-vegetarian food consumption, and various health conditions such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, metabolic dysfunction, and high uric acid levels. Dr. Gopal cautioned that individuals with kidney stones are susceptible to recurrence, stressing the importance of regular check-ups and follow-ups to preserve kidney health. He also warned that cases of kidney stones typically increase during the summer months due to dehydration.
Here are some dos and don'ts for maintaining healthy kidneys:
1. Ensure you drink enough water until your urine appears colorless.
2. Yellow urine signals insufficient water intake, increasing the risk of kidney stones.
3. Limit your consumption of salt and non-vegetarian foods.
4. Stay hydrated even when in air-conditioned environments.
